About Us
Sherburne Commons, Inc., is a not-for-profit organization comprised of Island volunteers.
While the idea of a community planned around the preferences of older adults has become increasingly popular around the country, it is a new concept to many Islanders. A group of volunteers has been working for more than 10 years to bring such a community to Nantucket.
When a strategic plan developed by Nantucket Cottage Hospital identified the need for a community like Sherburne Commons, everything from the cost of land to zoning issues prevented that need from being met. But many people on Nantucket consider our older Islanders to be one of our most valuable resources. We have been committed to making it possible for then to continue living here.
When Town Meeting designated a large parcel of Island land to meet a range of senior housing and service needs, the vision began to take shape.
The first residents moved into Sherburne Commons early in 2007.
Our Partners
- EGA Architects of Newburyport, Massachusetts, designed the homes and common buildings to project a sense of community, in the manner of an old-style walking village. The National Association of Homebuilders presented a Best of Seniors Housing gold award to EGA for Sherburne Commons, recognizing the Nantucket community as the “best of the best.”
- Operations are managed by Welch Healthcare and Retirement Group, a family-owned Massachusetts company specializing in senior services for over 50 years. Under the a third generation of leadership, the firm began when John and Rita Welch founded the John Scott House in their Braintree home, providing care to frail seniors. With the evolution of senior housing and healthcare, the Welch Group has become a national leader, distinguished as an innovator in the development of senior living programs. Today, Welch owns and manages senior living communities, assisted living residents, skilled nursing centers, a home care company and adult day programs that collective serve more than 2,100 residents on a daily basis. www.welchhrg.com.
